Donating School Records
The Archives of Manitoba acquires and preserves records of archival value related to Manitoba schools.
The Archives of Manitoba has an extensive collection of Manitoba school records, donated both by school divisions/districts and by members of the public.
If you are a member of the public and have school records you would like to donate, contact the Archives of Manitoba.
School divisions interested in discussing the donation of school records should also contact the Archives of Manitoba. Before contacting us, here are some things you should know:
- Manitoba Education, in consultation with the Archives of Manitoba, has developed Guidelines on the Retention and Disposition of School Division/District Records. The Guidelines describe records commonly maintained by school divisions/districts and outline the recommended retention period and disposition (archive or destroy) for each.
- We may also be interested in acquiring records that are not listed in the guidelines. Contact us to discuss these further.
- In order to donate school records to the Archives of Manitoba, the school division needs to pass a resolution specifying that archival records may be donated to the Archives of Manitoba. The Archives of Manitoba needs to receive a copy of the resolution.
- School divisions/districts are responsible for the cost of transporting records to the Archives, as well as for the boxes and bags used to pack the records. Visit MDA to order Manitoba Archives boxes.
- Before sending records to the Archives, they must be properly packed and listed. Once we have reviewed the lists, we will let you know when we are ready to receive the records. Use the School Records Transfer List form to prepare your list:
