Plan ahead
Archival research takes time. Records onsite have to be located and retrieved from multiple vaults. Records may be restricted and require permissions to be in place before they can be viewed. Records may be stored offsite and need to be ordered ahead of a research visit. If you are coming from out of town, or are planning a large project, you can contact us for assistance before you visit.
Security
All visitors to the Manitoba Archives Building must check in at the Security Desk. Archives clients will be given a visitor’s pass and will be asked to check all coats, bags, food and beverages. Lockers are provided free of charge.
Registration
Archives of Manitoba clients need to register each calendar year with current photo ID and contact information. Please bring one piece of government-issued photo identification and read the Archives Research Room Rules (PDF). Clients are required to sign in on every visit to the Archives Research Room.
Bring a pencil – or use one of ours
One of our key concerns at the Archives is the protection of original records – these records are one-of-a-kind and cannot be replaced. We ask clients to use pencils, not pens. Pencils are provided. We do not allow any food or beverages, even water, in the Archives Research Room. (Consider bringing a sweater, though, as the Research Room is often a little chilly.)
Bring a camera
The Archives of Manitoba allows clients to photograph records, where there are no restrictions on copying and where the condition of the record is not at risk. Find out more about self-service copying.
Please note that scanners, including hand-held scanners and similar scanning devices, are not permitted in the Archives Research Room.
We’re wireless
Free WIFI is available in the Archives Research Room. Clients are permitted to bring laptops. Electrical outlets are not plentiful in this historic building so bring a battery pack. The Archives has several public access workstations available for research use.
The Archives asks that cell phone conversations be held outside of the Research Room.
Take a break
There are vending machines in the Archives foyer with snacks and beverages. There are also several coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance of the Archives.
Scent-free
The Archives of Manitoba strives to be a scent-free environment to support the health and wellbeing of clients, visitors and staff. Please avoid the use of scented products when visiting the Archives of Manitoba.
