La Barrière Park
Near here on November 1, 1869, the Métis barred the road to representatives of the Hon. Wm. McDougall who were on their way to Fort Garry. As Lieutenant-Governor designate, McDougall's mission was to affect the mission to Canada of Rupertsland from the Hudson's Bay Company, and the North-Western territory from Britain. The intervention of the Métis forced the Canadian Government to undertake negotiations with them. As a result, plans to incorporate this area into the North-West Territories were abandoned and Manitoba was admitted to Confederation, July 15, 1870, as a province.
