Manitoba Heritage Council Commemorative Plaques
Reverend Henry Budd
Henry Budd was born near Norway House of Cree descent and received his education at Red River. In 1840 he was selected by the Church of England to establish its first northern mission, Devon, at The Pas. In 1853 he was ordained the first native Anglican Priest in Western Canada.
For thirty-five years he dedicated his life to the temporal and spiritual development of the native communities at The Pas, Cedar Lake, Moose Lake, The Pas Mountain, Cumberland House and Nepowewin. His translations of scriptural writings into Cree were used for many years throughout the north. His grave is located in this churchyard.
